From September 8th to 10th, the 9th Chinese Collegiate Rugby Sevens Championship was grandly opened in Yangqu County, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province (Shanxi Province Football Training Base). The rugby team “Gong Cheng” of Harbin Engineering University won the men’s first division championship.
When inspecting our university, the general president Xi Jinping stressed that Harbin Engineering University (HEU) should carry forward the fine traditions of the PLA Military Engineering Institute. Bearing in mind the president’s instructions and carrying forward the fine traditions of the PLA Military Engineering Institute, the members held rugby’ five core values “integrity, enthusiasm, unity, discipline and respect”, and worked hard without fear of strong enemies, which demonstrates the youthful demeanor of HEU’s athletes. HEU has always attached great importance to the all-round development of high knowledge and physical strength, including focusing on students’ physical health and the cultivation of students’ strong physique. The Department of Sports in HEU has given strong support since preparation. Li Kai, Party secretary of the Department of Sports, and deputy director Zhu Kai have personally attended the scene to offer warmly watch and cheer on. Coaches Sun Jingmeng, Zhao Yan and team doctor Shen Hujie provided detailed guidance to offer comprehensive service guarantee for the participants.
In addition, many veteran team members who have graduated and left HEU spontaneously came from all over the country to provide guidance and cheer for them. In the end, the “Gong Cheng” rugby team made another gold medal as a gift for the 70th anniversary of HEU with the confidence of daring to do and the momentum of able to win.
Liu Yunfei, the course leader of HEU’s rugby program, introduced rugby to HEU in 2003 and then vigorously developed it. In the training and study life, Liu has provided great help, patient guidance, and personalized development suggestions for team members.
Since its establishment in 2004, the team has represented HEU and Heilongjiang Province in the Northeastern College Rugby Tournament, National Rugby Championship, National Games Rugby Tournament and achieved excellent results. In 2019, it attended the Hong Kong University Rugby Sevens Invitational Tournament and won the runner-up, which is the first time in the team’s history to represent HEU to participate in the competition aboard. Since 2013, it has participated in the China Collegiate Rugby Sevens Championship for 8 times and won 4 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 1 bronze medal. And this year, another gold medal will be added in the history of the “Gong Cheng” rugby team!
